The kitchen isn’t just for cooking—it’s where real life happens. Morning coffee, late-night snacks, weekend baking, and dinners that end with everyone hanging out around the island. It should look great, work hard, and feel like you.

At Aspen & Ivy, we’re all about kitchens that are built to last and designed with intention. Not trendy, but timeless. And more importantly, spaces you actually enjoy being in. Here are some of our current favourites when it comes to kitchen design. Whether you're renovating or just gathering ideas, we hope these get your wheels turning.

Aspen & Ivy A stone backsplash that steals the show at our Stoneview Estate Lakefront Project. This natural limestone feature brings an earthy elegance to the heart of the kitchen, grounding the space and elevating the entire design.

A subtle scalloped backsplash detail adds a layer of softness to the range wall, an understated way to elevate a traditional slab with just enough interest. It’s these kinds of thoughtful, custom touches that bring personality to classic materials without overpowering the space. On the right, a soft corner curve and stone shelf create that seamless, custom look we love.

Design Features That Make Life Easier

One of our top features to include in any kitchen design is a butler’s pantry or scullery. This hardworking, tucked-away space just off the main kitchen is a total game changer, perfect for hiding the mess, handling prep work, or storing all those extra appliances and serving pieces that don’t need to be on display. Whether it’s used as a second prep zone during entertaining or simply to keep your day-to-day routine running smoothly, it helps keep your main kitchen looking clean and polished. Add a sink, a second dishwasher, or even a wine fridge, and it becomes a behind-the-scenes powerhouse that works quietly but efficiently. Ideal for busy households and anyone who loves to host.

On the left, a fully outfitted scullery pulls double duty with a second sink, wall ovens, and enough storage to keep your main kitchen clutter-free. On the right, just off the kitchen, a wood pocket door slides open to reveal a tucked-away butler’s pantry — a practical little secret that adds warmth, charm, and function behind the scenes.

Coffee bars are another small luxury we love. Whether tucked behind pocket doors, styled into a built-in nook, or seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry, a dedicated coffee station brings both function and beauty to the kitchen. It keeps everyday essentials organized and within reach, while freeing up precious counter space. But it’s more than just practical, it brings a sense of calm and intention to your morning. Designed thoughtfully, it can seamlessly blend into the kitchen or stand out as its own moment. A simple feature that feels like a daily indulgence.

In our Ridgehaven Chalet kitchen, the station sits just off the main prep area, seamlessly connected in style, but with its own designated zone. On the right, a sleek built-in nook tucks everything within the cabinetry, perfectly sized for the essentials, but off the main prep area.

Dialled Up Range Hoods

We’re loving statement range hoods right now - and not just for their functionality. Whether oversized, plastered, wrapped in stone, or fully integrated into millwork, a well-designed hood becomes a focal point that instantly elevates the entire kitchen. It adds sculptural interest and helps ground the space visually. More than just a spot to tuck away ventilation, today’s range hoods are architectural features, seamlessly blending into the design or boldly standing out.

A matte black range hood is the perfect example of a statement piece that’s bold and beautifully integrated. We love how the finish brings contrast and drama, while still feeling cohesive within the cabinetry.

Cabinet Colours We’re Into Right Now

Lately, we’ve been drawn to cabinet colours that feel warm, natural, and a little unexpected. Earthy shades like soft mushroom, warm taupe, and muddy clay give a kitchen that cozy, lived-in feel. We’re also really into those richer, moodier colours that feel like they were pulled straight from nature. The blue of a rainy sky, the deep purple of a fig, or that perfect burnt gold you only see in fall leaves. They’re bold, but not loud, and pair so well with natural textures like wood, stone, and aged metals for a space that feels rooted, relaxed, and quietly beautiful.

A soft, clay-toned cabinetry wraps the space in a cozy, grounded calm, while a rich, wood-stained island adds contrast and depth. On the right, things go even moodier with a deep, chocolate brown hue. These colours are timeless without being boring and a perfect way to bring a sense of warmth and sophistication into the kitchen.

Also fun: painting the inside of a glass cabinet a surprise colour. One of our favourite looks shown here with a khaki green exterior and a magenta pink interior for storing glassware - an unexpected pop.

Natural wood tones are another timeless favourite, offering a sustainable and warm aesthetic that feels connected to nature. Medium to dark wood cabinetry brings instant richness, warmth, and a sense of natural character to the kitchen. Whether it’s the relaxed, coastal feel of white oak or the refined depth of walnut, natural wood tones offer an organic balance to sleek materials like stone, tile, and metal. Today’s wood kitchens feel fresh and intentional, with styles that range from clean and minimal to warm and character-rich. It’s a material that evolves with its surroundings - elevated by thoughtful craftsmanship, subtle detailing, and a focus on quality. We're especially inspired by cabinetry made from sustainably sourced or locally crafted wood, an approach that’s as beautiful as it is mindful.

Our Whispering Pines Project features a full wall of white oak cabinetry, seamlessly integrating storage, built-in appliances, and layered lighting. Every detail in this kitchen was designed to feel effortless, functional, and timeless.

What ties all of these elements together is thoughtfulness. A kitchen should look good, yes - but more importantly, it should feel good. Every material, finish, and layout choice should be something you’ll still love years down the road. We always think: Does it feel warm? Does it work for your day-to-day life? Will it still make you happy when the newness wears off and real life sets in? That’s the kind of kitchen we want to help you build, one that works hard, feels like home, and stands the test of time.

If you're ready to create a kitchen that truly reflects how you live and how you want to feel in your home, we’d love to hear from you.
